Grandmaster William Cheung

William Cheuk Hing Cheung was one of the earliest disciples of Grandmaster Yip Man in 1951. When he was fourteen he dedicided to follow Wing Chun as a way of life. He was training full-time under the roof of his master for the next four years Wing Chun study took up all of his time. Between 1957 and 1958, Grandmaster Cheung won the Kung Fu elimination contests in Hong Kong against opponents with years more experience than himself. It was during that period that Grandmaster Cheung helped teach the late Bruce Lee many of the techniques Lee was to use during later years in his successful film career.

After Grandmaster Cheung left Hong Kong in 1959 to pursue his academic study in Australia, he continued his training in Wing Chun Kung Fu. It was not until 1974 that Grandmaster Cheung started teaching professionally in Melbourne, Australia.

In 1978 & 1979 Grandmaster Cheung was appointed Chief instructor for the U.S. 7th Fleet Navy for unarmed combat at the U.S. base in Yukosuka, Japan.

Cheung was awarded the Blact Belt Hall of Fame Award "Kung Fu Artist of the Year" in 1983 and in the following year set the world speed punching record of 8.3 punches per second (averaging 150 pounds/68 kg of force per punch) at Harvard University.

He is the author of ten books on the martial art of Wing Chun Kung Fu and has appeared in the cover stories of numerous international magazines. To promulgate his ideas and stimulate and enliven the art, Cheung has authored a variety of books and videos for the general public including "Wing Chun Bil Jee", "Wing Chun Butterfly Swords", "Wing Chun Dragon Pole", "Advance Wing Chun", "How to Develope Chi Power", "A Comparison of Wing Chun and Jeet Kune Do", "The Wing Chun Way" and "Protek: A Personal Protection Program".

In December 1988, he received yet another coveted Inside Kung Fu Hall of Fame Award as the 1989 Instructor of the Year. In 1995, he has been inducted into the Hall of Fame for the Australian Blitz Magazine.

He is President of the Australian National Kung Fu Federation, and Chairman of the World Wing Chun Kung Fu Association, and has lectured on the art of Wing Chun in Europe, England, Canada, South America, New Zealand, Bermuda and the United States as well as across Australia.

In the last 10 years, Grandmaster Cheung has been focusing part of his energy on the healing side of the art. He toured many countries in Europe, America and Asia treating sports injuries and lecturing on herbs and his meridian therapy programs to corporations as well as universities and hospitals. Cheung is at the moment working on a book on the topic of healing titled "Cheung's Meridian Therapy for Better Health" and a CD-ROM on "Cheungs Way to Deal with Stress".
